The mystic marriage of St. Catherine by Memling
Mystic marriage of St. Catherine

Wonderful print of a painting by Memling titled, "The mystic marriage of St. Catherine" in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1930.

Mystical marriage is a Catholic belief in which a woman, typically a saint, is symbolically married to Christ. This marriage takes place in a symbolic way in which Christ gives the woman a ring which only she can see. In return for the marriage the woman devotes her soul and life to God. She endures raptures and a deeper sense of spirituality. Often she bears the stigmata, the personification of the bodily wounds of the crucified Christ.
This print shows St. Catherine receiving the mystical marriage to Christ. The infant Jesus sits on the knees of the Virgin Mary. In his hand he is giving a ring to St. Catherine who kneels to the left of the print. Around them stand a group of angels, typical of such mystical marriages. Next to St. Catherine is a sword, symbol of justice. The background is a typical Italian renaissance scene with open fields and some houses.
The print is 8" x 10".

The Virgin and child by Jan Prevost
Virgin & Child in a Garden

Wonderful color print of a painting by Jan Prevost titled, "The Virgin and child in a garden" in the National Gallery, London, 1930.

This delightful print shows the Virgin Mary sitting in a garden. She wears the traditional blue robe with a large red cloak over the top. Her hair is worn long over her shoulders as a symbol of her virginity. A halo shines around her head as a symbol of her divinity. Upon her lap sits the infant Jesus dressed in swaddling clothes. Like his mother, he too wears a halo as befitting his divine status. The garden is a wonderful example of the renaissance painters work. Painted in deep greens with a realistic portrayal the painting conjures all the emotions one can associate with a religious painting of this type. The print is 8" x 10".

Saint Peter enthroned between St. John the Baptist and St. Paul by Cima da Conegliano
St. Peter, Paul & John

Wonderful color print of a painting by Cima da Conegliano, lent from the Royal Brera Gallery Milan, to the exhibition of Italian Art at Burlington House, titled, "St. Peter enthroned between St. John the Baptist and St. Paul", 1930.

The three saints of the title were perhaps the most three influential Saints on the early Christian Church. John the Baptist was revered as the man who baptised Christ in the River Jordan. Peter and Paul were particular revered for beginning the papacy in the city of Rome. Peter becoming the first pope of the Catholic Church. This picture shows Peter enthroned in the formal costume of the Pope. His hand is raised in benediction while in his other hand he holds a large cross. To his right (our left) is John the Baptist. Dressed in rags, John is portrayed as a young man dressed in rags as befitting a hermit. He too holds a cross on a staff. To Peter`s left (our right) is Paul. He is dressed in the early costume of the Cardinals. He holds a large book in his left hand and a sword in his right. This is symbolic of law and justice. At their feet sits a cherub playing a lute. At the feet of Peter sits two keys; the Keys to the Papacy or God Kingdom`s On Earth. The print is 8" x 10".
