Birket Foster (1825-1899) was one of the leading artists of his day. An artist working in watercolor, oil, etchings or engravings he displayed a collection of work concentrating mainly on the natural world. He worked for the "London Illustrated News", "Punch" and work for various poets such as Keats. Originally born in the north of England he traveled to London at the age of 5 with his family. Apprenticed to a wood engraver he finished his apprenticeship at the age of 21. He exhibited at the Royal Academy once with some of his paintings but became most famous for his watercolors. He is often criticized for having a formulaic method painting but nonetheless, his paintings manage to capture the natural world perfectly.

Etching, The country church

Wonderful fine quality etching by Birket Foster titled, "Beneath a flowery turf they sleep", 1859.

Nor fell Disease, before his time,
Hastes to consume life`s golden prime.
But when their temples long have wore
The silver crown of tresses hoar,
As studious still calm peace to keep,
Beneath a flowery turf they sleep.

This emotive scene shows a country church where a large yew tree partially conceals the nave of the church but the tower can be clearly seen. In the churchyard another yew tree gives shade to a group of tomb stones. Beyond the church a large expanse of countryside and a flight of birds. The page is 6 3/4" x 9" with the etching being 4" x 2 3/4" and in

Etching, The farm

Wonderful fine quality etching by Birket Foster titled,

"The darkening valley", 1859.
But when the curfew`s measured roar
Duly, the darkening valleys o`er,
Has echoed from the distant town,
They wish no beds of cygnet down,
No trophied canopies, to close
Their drooping eyes in quick repose.

A small hamlet as evening draws in. A cluster of houses encircled by fences. A set of sheep pens full of sheep with a pond to the fore. The moon emerges from the clouds and lights the air around. Trees abound in the valley especially along the ridgeline of the hills. The paper is 6 3/4" x 9" with the etching being 4" x 2 3/4" and in

Good condition with some foxing / browning.
