| Kate Greenaway (1846-1901)
Kate Greenaway was the daughter of John Greenaway, a wood-engraver for Punch and the London Illustrated News. Kate was one of the most popular figures in British book illustration in the latter part of the 19th Century. Her illustrations for children's books have remained enormously popular all over the world but especially in Britain and America. The public could not seem to get enough of Kate Greenaway and there were imitators everywhere. Her England is a world of childhood, where children dance in flowery meadows and characters from nursery rhymes find a life which is forever beautiful and innocent. The quaintly dressed children with their adult expressions were an overnight success in the 19th century and still enjoy great popularity today. From 1871 she produced various designs for Christmas and Valentine cards. She started working on her first almanac in 1882. She began designing book illustrations for printer Edmund Evans who also featured images by both Crane and Caldecott as prints in his books. As well as her book illustrations, Greenaway exhibited her watercolors at the Royal Academy from 1877, and had a widely praised exhibition of her work at the Fine Arts Society in 1891, on which occasion Lord Leighton bought a couple of drawings. Greenaway became a good friend of John Ruskin, the celebrated poet, maintaining a long correspondence with him. |
