British Martyrs

Delightful copper plate engraving from Fox`s Book of Martyrs with two separate pictures titled, "Sir Edmundbury Godfrey, a zealous Protestant magistrate, who was active in preventing the Popish Emissaries from making converts, strangled with a handkerchief in Somerset House, by five Roman Catholic Assassins".

The second scene is titled, "A woman with her sucking infant tied together in a bag and thrown into a river in Scotland; and four men hanged at the same time for eating goose on a fast day", 1784. The first engraving shows Sir Edmund being strangled by five assailants with a handkerchief. They have surrounded him and two men lean on the ends of the handkerchief whilst the others look on. This engraving shows a young woman being placed in a bag along with her child and about to be thrown in the river. To the right of the engraving four men are hung from a gallows whilst around the base stand a group of Scotsman in traditional dress. Both pictures have borders around them decorated with snakes, shields, chains and burning torches. Over each a face looks towards the viewer. The engraving is 15" x 9 1/2" while the internal pictures are 4 1/4" x 6".

Biblical Persecution

Delightful copper plate engraving from Fox`s Book of Martyrs with two separate pictures titled, "The persecution and bondage of the Hebrews by the Egyptians& c.".

The second scene is titled, "Moses and Aaron expostulating with Pharaoh, concerning the Persecutions of the Hebrews, or Children of Israel, who instead of obeying the message delivered from God increases their burden.", 1784.
The first engraving shows a group of Hebrews toiling for their masters. Some carry heavy loads of bricks whilst others dig at the soil with picks and shovels. To the left of the engraving is a large building which the Hebrews are repairing as it is alight. This engraving shows Moses and Aaron talking to Pharaoh about the plight of the Hebrews. Pharaoh sits on his throne to the left of the engraving while Moses and Aaron stand to the right. Several courtiers stand around looking on while in the background several Hebrews can be seen working. Both pictures have borders around them decorated with snakes, shields, chains and burning torches. Over each a face looks towards the viewer. The engraving is 15" x 9 1/2" while the internal pictures are 4 1/4" x 6".

Protestant March on Parliament

Delightful copper plate engraving from Fox`s Book of Martyrs, 1784.

This engraving shows a large march on the House of Parliament by Protestants. At the front is carried a large petition against the Acts of Parliament which befitted Catholicism rather than the Church of England. All the men are dressed in costume of the late 18th century and some carry banners stating, "No Popery" and "Protestant Association". A fine collection of buildings surround them. The picture has a border around it which is decorated with a pattern of leaves. The engraving is 15" x 9 1/2".

Martyrs in Europe

Delightful copper plate engraving from Fox`s Book of Martyrs with two separate pictures titled, "Several Protestants shot by the soldiers of the Duke of Guise, at Vassy in France, when attempting to make their escape from a barn, where they were assembled at their devotions".

The second scene is titled, "Rochus a carver of St.Lucar in Spain, burnt by order of the Inquisition, for defacing his own sign, which was the image of the Virgin Mary", 1784. The first engraving shows a group of soldiers led by an officer shooting upon a group of Protestants who are attempting to flee from an illegal meeting in France. Inside the barn is a large mob of Protestants who are being attacked by more soldiers. Several people already lay on the floor whilst other try to flee. The second engraving shows Rochus of St.Lucar being burnt at the stake. A group of men look on at his burning while on a wall above them stand two women looking on. A monk holds the cross towards Rochus as he is burnt. The pictures have borders around them which is decorated with a pattern of leaves, swords, whips and burning torches. The engraving is 15" x 9 1/2" while the internal pictures are 4 1/4" x 6".

Primitive Martyrs

Delightful copper plate engraving from Fox`s Book of Martyrs with four separate pictures titled, "Flaying primitive Christians alive and cutting out their tongues during the 10th fiery persecution".

The second scene is titled, "St.Lawrence burnt on a gridiron by order of the Emperor Valerianus in the 8th Roman Persecution of the Christian Church". The third scene is titled, "Another mode of torture inflicted on the primitive martyrs by the Emperor Dioclesian, vinegar and salt being poured on the most tender parts while roasting." The final scene is titled, "two primitive martyrs put into a copper of boiling oil by order of the proconsul of Ephesus, during the reign of Nero, AD69", 1784.
The first scene shows two Christians tied to wooden stakes. The one on the left is having his tongue removed by a Roman whilst to the right the Christian is having his skin removed by another Roman. In the background is a group of Roman buildings. The second engraving shows St.Lawrence being martyred on a iron grill. Underneath him a fire burns and is being stoked by a Roman. To the right of the engraving is the Emperor and a group of courtiers watching St.Lawrence being killed. The third scene shows a Christian tied to a roasting spit over a burning fire. A Roman holds a ladle filled with a mixture of salt and vinegar and pours it over the Christian as he is being roasted. The scene is set in what appears to be a dungeon. The final picture shows two Christians in a copper cauldron. A Roman soldier pours boiling oil into the cauldron while the Christians still sit in it. To the left of the engraving are three men, all members of the nobles of the Province of Ephesus, who condemned the Christians to death. All of the pictures are surrounded by a border which has decorations of various weapons and also some patterns of leaves and flowers. A curtain also decorates the top and sides of the engraving border. The engraving is 15" x 9 1/2" while the internal pictures are 5" x 3".
