Holy Alters of Christianity
Wonderful,
fine quality steel line engraving showing four altars spoken of in the
Old Testament, c.1869.
This interesting
engraving shows the four altars that were used within the Tabernacle
of the Hebrew`s. The top altar is that of the Burnt Sacrifice. This
was used to sacrifice animals to God in atonement of Sin. The altar
is decorated with various winged lions and other forms of naturalistic
decoration. The second altar is that of the Table of Shew Bread. This
altar contained 12 loaves of bread that were a symbol of the 12 tribes
of Israel. Every Sabbath the loaves were replaced and given to the priests.
The bread was made from the finest quality, thus its name of Shew-Bread.
The third altar is that of Incense. This was used to burn incense as
a sacrifice to God. Each year the blood from the Sin Sacrifice was smeared
on the horns of the Altar of Incense. The final altar is that of the
Ark of the Covenant. This contained the relics of the Stone Tablets
collected by Moses at Mount Sinai. Borne before the Hebrews as they
marched to war it was secret weapon as well as one of the most holy
of items. It was said that the presence of God constantly filled the
Ark when it remained in the Holy of Holies. Only the High Priest was
allowed to enter this most sacred place. The engraving is 8" x
10 1/2".
