Judgment of Solomon

Wonderful fine quality steel plate engraving titled "The Judgment of Solomon" painted by Poussin and engraved by J. Rogers, c.1869.

This engraving shows King Solomon sitting in judgment of the two woman and the baby. A soldier holds the baby by the leg ready to cut the child in two as Solomon instructed. On either side of Solomon are the woman involved in the dispute, both are crying out in horror of Solomon`s judgment. The scene is from 1 Kings, Chapter III, Versus 19-27. "And the king said, Bring me a sword. And they brought a sword before the king. And the king said, Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other. Then spoke the woman whose the living child was unto the king, for her bowels yearned upon her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it. Then the king answered and said, Give her the living child, and in no wise slay it: she is the mother there of." Daniel and the Writing on the Wall

Wonderful fine quality steel plate engraving titled "Daniel Interpreting The Writing On The Wall", painted by B.West and engraved by J. Rogers, c.1869.

This engraving has Daniel standing in the canter of the engraving pointing towards the writing on the wall. In a chair sits a king who looks on at Daniel with surprise while surrounding him and Daniel are several wise men with scrolls of knowledge. Several courtier`s also stand around watching the scene. The scene is from Daniel, Chapter 5, Versus 22-28; "24 Then was the part of the hand sent from him; and this writing was written. 5:25 And this is the writing that was written, MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN. 5:26 This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it. 5:27 TEKEL; Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting. 5:28 PERES; Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians." David Sends a Letter

Wonderful fine quality steel plate engraving titled "David Sending A Letter To Joab By Uriah" painted by F.Bol and engraved by J. Rogers, circa. 1869.

This engraving shows David sitting in his throne and passing a letter to Uriah to carry to Joab. David has two advisors on either side of him. All are dressed in Victorian ideals of classical costume. The scene is found in the Bible, Samuel II, Chapter 11, Verse 14; "14 And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah. 15 And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die." The print is 10 1/2" x 8 1/2".

Very Good condition. There is some foxing / brown edging with a slight water stain on the right side.

Joshua and the Sun and Moon

Wonderful fine quality steel plate engraving titled "Joshua Commanding The Sun Moon To Stand Still", circa 1869.

This engraving shows Joshua on his horse pointing up into the sky commanding the sun and moon to stand still. Around him a dreadful battle takes place. The costumes of the combatants are a mixture of Imperial Roman and traditional Arabian clothes. The scene is from Joshua Chapter 10, Verse 12 when the Bible reads, "Then spake Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon." The print is 8 1/2" x 10 1/2".

Samson Seized by the Philistines

Wonderful fine quality steel plate engraving titled "Samson Seized By The Philistines", painted by Rubena and engraved by J. Rogers, c.1869.

This engraving shows Samson in the center of the engraving with his arms being seized by the Philistines. Next to him is Delila who cut off his hair, reducing his strength and allowing him to be captured. The scene is found in the Bible, Judges, Chapter 16, Verse 20; "18 And when Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, Come up this once, for he hath showed me all his heart. Then the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and brought money in their hand. 19 And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and she caused him to shave off the seven locks of his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him. 20 And she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he wist not that the LORD was departed from him." The print is 10 1/2" x 8 1/2".
