Schofield, 1900, English Town Scene, drawing

Pencil sketch of English Town with river, barge, fishermen and Round Tower with early buildings. Is this a sketch by the American Walter Elmer Schofield (1867 - 1944) of the New Hope School ?

Scholfield studied at the Pennysylvania Academy of Fine Arts and favoured scenes just like this when he spent time in England in 1900 - 1901. He resided then in Southport with his family during which time he spent most of his time painting Cornish Village scenes. In his painted works, his colours and brushmarks build up in such a way as to be impressionist in style and blending into a unified whole. This work is pencil so the method would likely differ somewhat if this was from his hand. In his paintings, he also employed some neo-impressionist touches in the form of broad brushmarks much like those of Derain or Vuillard. The bold pencil work here may be indicative of such interests but on the other hand this could perhaps be the work of a relative in the same areas of interest. Interested parties could do more research in this regard. The signature is shown clearly on the scanned image below and appears to be either “W” or “N” Schofield Jan 31, 1900. The picture needs more sensitive framing and a tighter mounting to the left and bottom sides in particular. My personal choice would be to edit, not by cutting but only by mounting, the image so as to lose the left 3 1/4 to three and a 1/2” where the trees are, in order to tighten and focus the attention on to the river aspects. See the edited image. The vertical bands of brownish staining would appear to have come from the slats of wood sealing the reverse of the sketch into the frame. Perhaps it might be possible to remove these?Size: 12.5 x 20 inches sketch with frame 22.5 x 29.75 Condition: The afore mentioned brown marks from the wood need attention or removal perhaps. There are two small holes hidden amongst the trees on your left and a cluster of three or four pinholes on the naked page some six inches below and a small puncture along the bottom.
