British Watercolor - Street/Town Square 1800’S - (Wales border?)

Description: Delightful British street scene of the 1800’s most likely Wales or the Welsh borders featuring some Very Early pre-Georgian buildings and ‘washerwomen’/’linen carriers’ with 'peddlars' / 'peasants' in the distance. It is poetically atmospheric with large town or city buildings receeding mistily into the distance away from the foreground which may well be a town square or market area.

The colours are muted and earthy in a European palette appropriate to the period (pehaps slightly faded with age) and richer red tones to the costumes; the handling of the fine brushmarks is delicate and patient and the perspective and sculptural presence of the work is excellent. The scene moves away from us drawing us in and giving us some tangible sentiment of the life and ‘mores’ of the time. It really does engage quietly and slowly, the more we regard it - and a dialogue begins which can occupy us happily in reverie for some time.

We recommend this item to you as a genuine source of pleasure over the long term and a privilege to own. It is presented in an period mount card with a curved top margin all of which inner sloped edge is tipped in gold finish and should be visible on our scanned image. The gold period frame is damaged but contains the scene in appropriate delicacy. This sun bathed scene is handsome, yet intimate and personal. In a room it offers a private place to go; to reflect ; to reverie.

Size: Watercolour 53cm x 35.5cm 20.75 inches x 14 inches. Frame and mount 28 inches x 21 inches.

Condition: The watercolour itself is in seemingly excellent condition with only a slight textural variation to the top left corner . The mount board is faded slightly in accordance with natural ageing and has barely any foxing. In our opinion the mounting board is best suited to the painting but this is a matter of personal taste. The watercolour is securely attached to the mount board and backing board as it was when it came to us - with some brittle early brown glue. There has been a slight prior attempt to dislodge the watercolour from its card mountings (visible only on close inspection of both the right and left margins. The period frame is very damaged on the corners but in its delicate proportion it does offer subtle containment to the scene and it may well be worth having a plaster craftsman use the remaining good section of corner moulding to recast and to fashion replacement corners to the rest.
